The audience for this stack is K-12 teachers or support staff who are interested in pursuing professional development in Educational Technology. The range of skills include the computer beginner, who is not comfortable online, to more advanced users seeking additional resources and opportunities to participate in the EdTech communities available online and in person.
The goals of the wiki are :
1. To guide individuals to the professional development resources for technology in education that best suit their interests, learning styles, learning formats, time constraints, and technical abilities.
2. To make Professional Development accessible and relevant for the full range of teachers and staff in K12 education, thereby encouraging a higher level of involvement of PD outside the required staff development in the district.
3. To eventually increase the level, frequency, and diversity of technology integrated into and transforming classroom learning experiences across all grade levels in the district.
3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers:
d. model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning.
5. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership
Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources. Teachers:
a. participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning.
c. evaluate and reflect on current research and professional practice on a regular basis to make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in support of student learning.
d. contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession and of their school and community.
There are two ways I will judge the effectiveness of this wiki as a tool for increasing the access and participation in professional development for the teachers and staff of my building and potentially the district. One is anecdotal, through the interaction with faculty and staff. As they pursue professional development, their questions will change, and they will seek to incorporate their new learning into classroom practices - which is where they may seek out my skills as an integrator. I may also see an impact in the diversity of student work occurring around the building. I also hope to see changes in the fall and spring surveys of faculty and staff when they are asked which tools or experiences they are familiar with when it comes to technology in education. The second, more formal means of evaluation will be a survey the staff will complete after they have used some of the resources from the wiki. This Google Form will be available indefinitely, so as individuals complete a branch or thread in the wiki they will be able to give feedback regarding their experience and learning. The survey data will populate a spreadsheet and provide data in text and graph format for evaluating the effectiveness of this wiki toward the stated goals.
Needs of Diverse Learners
The structure of the wiki is designed to work with the learning preferences of those interacting with it. I have presented a range of learning opportunities, including those face to face, in small groups, individual tutoring, large groups, by content area, online, synchronous and asynchronous, interactive and independent, with audio, video and text based options. I have also included text, images, audio and video within the presentation itself. The resources and tutorials seek to support both those at the beginner stages of using the technology and also to provide avenues of inquiry for those at the more advanced levels. Those in need of adaptive technologies to interact with the wiki would need to be aware of those needs and implement them in the system preferences of their computer (ie: reading the text on the page, etc).
